First in-salon consultation? What to expect and how to prepare

By HairCUSTOMIZED, LLC | August 8, 2026

A lot of first-timers tell us they’re nervous, so let’s make this simple. People come to us after struggling with fine or low-density hair and they’re relieved to finally have a plan, not a guess. Your in-salon consultation is our required first step before any service, and it’s where we talk through your hair story, look closely at what’s happening right now, and map out the right next moves. You’ll leave with a written estimate of time and cost, so you can decide with real numbers in front of you.

First Time Consultation (IN SALON) at HairCUSTOMIZED in Laurel MD: what to expect and how to prepare

Quick reassurance: this isn’t a “sales appointment.” It’s a clear, two-way conversation where we listen, explain options, and make sure you feel comfortable moving forward.

What to do before your first time consultation (and what to bring)

The fastest way to get an accurate plan is to walk in with the details we’d normally spend time pulling out of you. We’ll still ask the questions, but this keeps your consult focused and productive.

Bring these 4 things

  • Inspo photos that show size, parts, and the overall vibe. A quick screenshot beats trying to describe it.
  • A list of recent chemical services (color, relaxer, texturizer, keratin). Dates matter.
  • What you’re using at home, especially shampoo, conditioner, oils, gels, and anything you put on your scalp.
  • A note about sun and pool exposure. Maryland humidity, summer sun, and chlorine can change how hair behaves, so tell us if you’ve been outside a lot lately.

And please come ready to say your real constraints out loud. If you need evening or weekend options because you commute out of Greenview toward Fort Meade, DC, or Baltimore on I-95 or the MARC line, tell us. If you have a firm budget, tell us. We’ll build a plan that makes sense for your schedule and your hair, not just what looks good on day one.

Inside the 60-minute in-salon consultation: the exact flow

Our Consultation (IN SALON) is booked as 60 minutes. That gives us enough time to slow down, look closely, and answer your questions without rushing you out the door.

1) We start with your hair story, not our preferences

We’ll talk about what you’ve tried, what you liked, what you hated, and what made you book. A lot of people appreciate that we listen without pushing a size or style just because it’s what we prefer. If you’re coming in as a transfer client, we’ll also talk honestly about what’s working and what needs help.

2) We look at density, scalp, and any problem spots

This is where we figure out what your hair can realistically handle right now. People come to us with dryness, brittleness, or scalp issues and they’re often surprised how much a solid plan and consistent care can change things. If you’ve had issues like white bulbs or weak areas, we’ll point out what we see and explain what it means for your next service.

3) We talk options: microlocs, Sisterlocks, traditional locs, maintenance, repairs, and natural styles

This consult covers the services we do here, including microlocs, loc extensions, traditional loc installations, loc maintenance and reties, loc repairs, loose natural styles, and braids, cornrows, and crochets. We’ll also show photos during the conversation when it helps you compare choices. If we think a strand test or patch test makes sense before color, we’ll explain why and when we’d do it.

4) We build a plan with timing and real numbers

You’ll get a written estimate of service length and cost afterward. Pricing can vary, especially if repairs are needed since that takes more time. We’d rather be upfront during the consult than surprise you on install day.

After the consultation: your written estimate, your next steps, and how the $50 works

After your in-salon consultation, we’ll send you off with a written estimate so you can make a clean decision. If you’re planning a loc install, we’ll also talk about what you should be doing in between appointments to keep your hair in a healthier place. People often tell us they appreciate the education piece, especially if they’ve been guessing at products and routines for years.

Consultation fee: The Consultation (IN SALON) is $50. It’s non-refundable, and it rolls over as a credit toward any service scheduled within 90 days.

If you’re hoping to book a service the same day, ask us about availability before you come in. Some services, especially installs and detailed repair work, need their own dedicated appointment time. We’ll help you choose a realistic timeline so you’re not stuck making extra trips around Greenview, Laurel Lakes, or the Fort Meade corridor.

We serve Laurel, Savage, Jessup, Columbia, Elkridge, and Fort Meade, and we’re used to working around busy schedules. If you’re a shift worker or you’re juggling a military schedule, let us know early so we can plan your next appointment times smartly.

3 consultation tips that make the plan clearer (and keep your hair comfortable)

Here are a few things our regulars do that make the consult smoother and the plan more accurate.

Say the words “too tight” if you’ve had pain before

A big fear with loc maintenance is leaving sore. We check in, we talk through what we’re doing, and we keep comfort on the table the whole time. People who’ve had painful reties elsewhere often notice the difference quickly.

Be honest about repairs and weak areas

If you already know you have thinning, slippage, or breakage, tell us. Repair work takes time, and it can affect the estimate. This is exactly why we require the consultation before scheduling any hair service.

Use our consultation to compare loc types with your hair type

Microlocs, Sisterlocks, and traditional locs all wear differently depending on density, strand size, and lifestyle. We’ll talk through what fits your goals, and you stay in control of the final decision.

Ready for a plan you can actually follow in Laurel?

If you’ve been researching for months, or you’ve had a consultation elsewhere that felt rushed or pushy, this is the reset. We take time to understand your hair story, we explain the process clearly, and we put your estimate in writing. People stick with us because the work stays consistent and the communication stays open.

Bring your photos, bring your questions, and bring your schedule constraints. We’ll take it from there, and you’ll leave knowing your next step, your timing, and your cost.
